Alien: Covenant – Review

“In space no one can hear you scream…” That was the tag line that started it all back in  1979 and we seem to be coming back full circle here as the franchise is taking us back to before the iconic film so we can see how it all started. “Prometheus” opened the door to the prequel where our beloved Xenomorphs came from as a sort of an origin story (if that’s what you want to call it). I felt it was more than just a prequel/origin story as it can be a standalone film if it wanted to be. The “Alien” universe is freaking huge and loved by so many which is why it is also guarded by so many. I recall being scared to death of the first film when I saw it at the tender age of 9 for the first time at home. Alien: Covenant aims to begin to bridge the gap between “Prometheus” and the original “Alien” film because you know there is one more film coming to seal the deal! We were able to screen the film last week and here is our spoiler-free review.

“The Path to Paradise begins in Hell…”

The Covenant is a colony ship bound for new land to colonize and they are carrying precious cargo in the form of 2000 plus colonists frozen until they reach their destination. Already you are trying to predict what is going to happen right? Well think again because it will go a different way right from the start. Director Ridley Scott has done a magnificent job in setting the tone with Alien:Covenant and the story he wants to tell. There is actually a very good story to the Alien franchise when you begin to analyze it and pick it apart. It is not just a really cool Alien bursting out of people’s chest and causing mayhem and death. That was the complaint from some with the “Prometheus” film because there wasn’t enough of that though there was a solid story to it. Lets agree to disagree on that because if not then we will never finish here.

Back to the film review already in progress. “Alien:Covenant” will have you closing your eyes and jumping here and there and possibly yelling at the screen “Don’t go in there!!!” a few times and we loved that! We started already trying to see who will die first and how. We just couldn’t help ourselves. We start off in space aboard the Covenant a get a clear idea of what they are doing up there. What their mission is and how they plan to accomplish it. I will say that Michael Fassbender is joy to watch on screen from the beginning to the very end. The whole cast has a great chemistry on screen as the story begins and we begin to lose them one by one. You will see that they are all couples since this is a colonization mission. Pay close attention to the opening scene as there is a nice chunk of information for you to feast on. The prologue that 20th Century Fox released earlier is also further explained in the first part of the film so keep your eyes peeled there as well. The crew of the Covenant is in route to a specific location in order to colonize and earth like planet and continue the human race which is in trouble back home.

It is very possible to have a film that is simple and complex at them same time. Alien:Covenant manages to pull this off with its eyes closed. You will get your thrills and chills mixed in with some great action sequences. My skin crawled every time the Alien would appear and begin to make its noises.  Where is the suspense you may be thinking? It is there, believe it is there which is what we think makes Alien:Covenant flow so smoothly. Like we said earlier the tone of the film is very grim and dark and it doesn’t stray from that. The effects are one of the best we have seen on screen because you do not feel like you are being crammed a whole lot of CGI down your throat. Mr. Scott loves using practical effects and heck so do we! It adds a lot of depth to value to what you are watching. The way it transfers to the big screen needs to be appreciated because studios sometimes like to just go the CGI route instead of putting in the work to make movie magic happen.

Our final verdict in “Alien:Covenant” is that you should head out this weekend and see this movie! It can stand alone as its own film and it fits right into the Alien universe just like a glove. It will all begin to make sense though do not worry if you never saw “Prometheus” or any of the other “Alien” films. In our book that adds a lot of value to the film. This is one you definitely need to see on the big screen to get the full effect of the film.
